地藏王菩薩本願經

In this series of nine pen and ink drawings, I explore the profound themes of the Original vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Sutra, a text deeply rooted in Buddhist philosophy. Inspired by the intricate etching techniques of Albrecht Dürer, each drawing serves as a visual meditation on the vivid depictions of hell presented in the sutra.

The Ksitigarbha Sutra emphasizes the importance of compassion and the potential for redemption, even in the darkest realms. Through my artwork, I aim to bring these haunting scenes to life, inviting viewers to reflect on the nature of suffering and the possibility of spiritual awakening. Each drawing captures a moment of tension, a glimpse into the struggles faced by beings trapped in the cycle of rebirth, while simultaneously highlighting the guiding light of Ksitigarbha, the Bodhisattva of the earth.

As you journey through this collection, I encourage you to engage with the emotional depth and narrative complexity of each piece. Together, let us contemplate the themes of suffering, compassion, and the transformative power of faith.

The pen illustration series is included in the Chinese, English, and French translations of the 'Original Vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Sutra printed and presented by the Pure Land Assembly in 2020.
