The Rebirth of Chinese Mythology

乙巳說蛇

Stylish illustrations reshape cultural relics.

Cultural relics often have an inaccessible impression. The Chinese University of Hong Kong Art Museum team used cultural and creative souvenirs as bait to reshape the image of the relics and integrated exhibition-related activities to attract visitors.

In May 2025, the museum launched the "Check-in for Flash Cards" campaign, collaborating with local illustrator Caine Wong to design a set of sticker flash cards featuring snake-related artefacts in the collection. Visitors who found artefacts matching the illustration's theme and checked in within the museum received one. The illustrator reimagined the relics with stylish brushstrokes and colors, adding flash effects. Without flipping over and reading the introduction, the illustrations alone would likely be unrelated to the relics. Zhuang Tingkuang said, "In our design, we not only presented the artifacts in their original form, but also considered how to showcase their unique characteristics while making them more appealing." The event attracted many students, faculty, staff, and the public. While checking in, they also got to see the actual artefacts, which encouraged the audience to learn more about them. Tam Ka-wai, multimedia designer at the Art Museum, stated, "The Museum's cultural and creative products aren't primarily about profit, but about promoting culture and allowing the public to learn more about cultural heritage." Therefore, these products are not only sold on consignment at the Museum's bookstore, but are also occasionally redeemed for free during promotional events.
